An Introduction to Process Analyzer Sampling Systems (PASS)

A topic near and dear to our hearts, sampling systems and analytical instrumentation are what our field engineers do best. They get involved with various fluid system projects and help tackle different challenges, problems, and applications. As extensive and challenging as it may seem, you can also be a Process Analyzer Sampling Systems (PASS) expert with the right tools, tips, and tricks. This blog post is designed to do just that with content taken directly from the first section of our five-day advanced training course.

Let's start with an overview of the course. Why do we need PASS training? What is it?

What is Process Analyzer Sampling System?

A process analyzer sampling system is one of the most challenging systems within your plant. Not only is it challenging to design, it’s also challenging to operate accurately. If you make one minor adjustment here, you may end up having to make a major one elsewhere. It’s no wonder Swagelok gets so many good questions, and attentive trainees, during our process analyzer sampling system (PASS) training courses. Over the last 50 years we have been teaching, we have observed students experiencing many epiphanies.

Why Do We Need Process Analyzer Sampling System Training?

Did you know 80% of issues in analyzer installations are sample system-related? Did you also know that many college-level courses don't teach this? With little formal training available and analyzer technology continuously improving, Swagelok has created and implemented a successful advanced training course. This PASS course teaches you how to design and optimize process analyzer sampling systems, providing the sound principles needed to prevent costly errors.

PASS Course Details

Training & Education

work safer, smarter, and keep up with the latest industry standards with Swagelok training and education.

While this class tends to focus on "Continuous On-Line Sampling," much of what is learned here can be used in other forms of sampling, such as grab sampling, lab sampling, and point sampling. The bottom line in the field is that your online analyzer has to agree with what your lab is getting from a grab sample standpoint. Making a sampling mistake in either one means it is highly possible those measurements won't line up. In other words, a giant headache for you and your team.
